Important Information for Using Our Bogu Cleaning & Remake Service with Confidence
Please be sure to read the following before sending your kote, men, tare, do, gi, or hakama for cleaning.
About Kote Cleaning
- Please leave the kote himo (cords) attached when sending your kote for cleaning.
- Some slight fading may occur as a result of cleaning.
- The leather parts and the palm (te-no-uchi) may become slightly stiff after cleaning. They will return to normal after a few practice sessions.
- Holes in the palm, damage to the back of the hand, or damage to the cords may spread during cleaning. In addition, damage that was not noticeable before cleaning may become apparent afterward.
- After cleaning, the kote may feel slightly tighter, but it will return to normal after a few practice sessions.
- During cleaning, indigo dye from the navy trim leather may transfer onto the palm.
- Depending on the type of leather in the palm, the years of use, and storage conditions, cleaning may cause it to harden or become damaged.
About Men Cleaning
- You may leave the men himo (cords) attached when sending your men for cleaning; we will clean them together with the men.
- Some slight fading may occur as a result of cleaning.
- The leather parts may become slightly stiff after cleaning. They will return to normal after a few practice sessions.
- Holes in the palm, damage to the back of the hand, or damage to the cords may spread during cleaning. In addition, damage that was not noticeable before cleaning may become apparent afterward. In particular, the jet-black and vermilion lacquered areas of the men buchi (mask rim) will flake off. Also, on the men-buton (facepiece padding), leather that has been held in place by salt and other components of sweat acting as a binder will come off during cleaning. We recommend having it cleaned sooner rather than later.
- The men-gane (metal grille) is made of various materials; on grilles where coating peeling, scratches, or corrosion have already progressed, these issues may become more apparent after cleaning.
- The paint on the inside of the men-gane is often applied only lightly and, due to sweat and humidity, may peel off simply from contact with water. Please note that the durability of this paint varies even among products from the same manufacturer.
- After cleaning, the men may feel slightly tighter, but it will return to normal after a few practice sessions.
- We do not repair damaged parts. We recommend having any repairs done after cleaning is completed.
- Please remove the men shield before sending. We cannot be held responsible for any breakage or cracking of the shield.
About Tare Cleaning
- Damage to the edges or decorative parts of the tare, and damage to the cords, may spread during cleaning. In addition, damage that was not noticeable before cleaning may become apparent afterward.
- Differences in fading between the large flaps, small flaps, and the center and side large flaps cannot be resolved by cleaning. We recommend a remake.
- Adhesive from the number stickers (No. stickers) used for gradings may remain. We recommend removing them promptly after the grading.
About Do Cleaning
- You may leave the do himo (cords) attached when sending your do for cleaning; we will clean them together with the do.
- Fraying or damage to the shokko (chest decoration) and the chichigawa (leather loops) may spread during cleaning.
- In addition, damage that was not noticeable before cleaning may become apparent afterward.
- Scratches on the do-dai (chest guard body) cannot be fixed by cleaning. For bamboo do-dai, gaps may develop in the bamboo depending on how often it is used.
- The do-mune (chest section) absorbs more sweat than you might expect, so we recommend having it cleaned sooner rather than later.
About Dye Remake for Kote, Men, and Tare
- For our dye remake, we use natural indigo. Its colorfastness (resistance to fading) is not much different from pure indigo. During the remake, indigo may get onto embroidered names, manufacturer logos, the palm, and the leather trim on the underside of the edges. Please understand this in advance.
- Leather parts made of cowhide may not take the dye, and even when dyed, they may appear black.
- Items with significantly advanced fading will require more time to dye.
- Indigo may get onto the tsuki-dare (throat flap) and shokko. Please understand this in advance.
- For men buchi (mask rim) remakes, we use a dye similar to genuine urushi lacquer. For vermilion lacquer, the color tone (shade and vividness) is done in our shop's own vermilion-red (because vermilion lacquer ranges from red to orange depending on the men).
- *Due to the nature of deerskin, cowhide, and similar leathers, scars the animal received while alive may become apparent after cleaning.
- We do not repair damaged parts. We recommend having any repairs done after cleaning is completed.
- As a rule, dye remakes are applied to the outer side only. Please consult us regarding remakes of the inner side.
- Some slight color loss will occur depending on how the item is used after the remake.
About Do Polish Coating
- Depending on the material of the do-dai, some may not develop a shine. On black Yamato do and black resin do, scratches where the surface has melted from shinai friction will not shine. Coating will make them slightly less noticeable. (Please note that visual perception varies from person to person.) Other colors will develop a shine.
- We cannot treat do-dai with fur-like textured surfaces, such as sharkskin or tiger patterns.
- Scratches that reach the base material of the do cannot be removed.
- After coating, the surface gains a certain degree of strength, but this treatment does not make it scratch-proof.
- The shine will diminish within a few years after coating. Please order another polish coating when needed.
- Polish coating can also be applied to dry-lacquer (matte-finish) do. In this case, we finish it in a matte state without adding shine.
About Cleaning Kendo Gi and Hakama
- When cleaning kendo gi and hakama, we wash them so as to release as little color as possible, but due to the nature of indigo, the color cannot be completely prevented from bleeding. Some indigo will gradually run out with each cleaning.
- The pleat lines of the hakama may not come out perfectly straight due to stretching and shrinking of the fabric. Also, if a line has completely disappeared, it may not be possible to restore the original line.
- Partial fading may occur due to sun exposure, staining, and deterioration over time. In addition, existing damage to the fabric may become apparent.
*About Cleaning White Bogu
Some white bogu use red felt or colored/patterned fabric for the inner padding (cotton). Cleaning may cause these pigments to bleed through to the surface. Unlike ordinary stains, these pigments are difficult to remove. Please send your items for cleaning with this understanding.
